The Myth of Immigrants and Crime
The 2024 presidential campaign was rife with rhetoric around migrants coming to the US to commit violent crimes. This narrative about a “migrant crime wave” was so inflammatory that it arguably bolstered its loudest advocate’s path to victory. But of course, it was simply not true.
The Buffalo News recently met with our Director of Advocacy, Catharine Grainge, our House Manager at Vive, Fatuma Musa, and one of our friends, Rubbens Mukunzi, to talk about this narrative. Journalist Dan Herbeck also consulted a researcher and attorney from the Brennan Center and a number of published studies, to determine just how untrue this myth was.
Lies like these have real-life consequences. And they feed off of a human tendency to fear something when we don’t understand it. At Jericho Road, we encourage you to get closer to issues like our broken immigration system, cycles of poverty, and healthcare injustice, before you buy into harmful and hateful rhetoric.
